Keith Richards tipped as Depp's dad in third Pirates film

Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards is set to make a cameo appearance in the third instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is set to make a cameo appearance in the third instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed Tuesday that the iconic rocker will portray the father of flamboyant pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, played by actor Johnny Depp, when filming resumes next month.

"We're all looking forward to the idea of Keith coming in," Depp told a news conference in London, which hosted the U.K. premiere of the series' sophomoretale Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on Monday.

Dead Man's Chest opens across the U.K. on Thursday and North America on Friday.

Despite being based on a Disney theme-park ride, the first film in the series Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl became a smash hit in 2003, with the majority of the praise reserved for Depp's lovable rogue.

Depp has often said that he partially based his character on the real-life body language and mannerisms of Richards, who was legendary for his hard-living, partying ways in the early days of the Stones.

Most recently, the 62-year-old Richards was injured in a fall in Fiji and was forced to undergo head surgery in New Zealand, which delayed the Rolling Stones world tour.

"I can't wait to see him well, if he doesn't kill himself falling out of coconut trees," co-star Orlando Bloom added.

"Very rock and roll."
