Layoffs expected at Globe and Mail

Layoffs are looming at the Globe and Mail, its publisher says.

Layoffs are looming at the Globe and Mail.

The Toronto-based paper announced a voluntary buyout package for staff on Friday.

But in a memo obtained by CBC News, publisher Philip Crawley said the buyout offer is unlikely to produce enough response to avoid layoffs.

It isn't clear yet how many job cuts are expected.

Crawley said a sharp downturn in the newspaper's advertising revenue in the past six months leaves him with no alternative but to reduce staff.

The national paper is owned by CTVGlobemedia, which has already cut positions at MuchMusic and CTV News.
