Slow-moving westernThe Power of the Dogandsci-fi epicDunelead the nominationsfor the 94th Academy Awards, with 12and 10nominations respectively.

The Power of the Dog's nominations were spread out through almost every big category. Jane Campion is up for best director, and is now the first woman to benominated for that category twice, following her 1993 nod forThe Piano. Star Benedict Cumberbatchis also up for best actor, whileJesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee areboth nominated for best supporting actor. Kirsten Dunst is in the running for best supporting actress her first Oscarnomination.

Dunealsomanaged to score nominations in multiple categories, includingbest original score, best adapted screenplay, cinematography, costume design, production design and the night's top award:best picture.

Other best picture nominations went toBelfast,CODA,Don't Look Up,Drive My Car,King Richard,Licorice Pizza,Nightmare Alley,The Power of the Dog andWest Side Story.

But even asDunereceived accolades in other categories, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve was ignored for the best director. "Here is a trick for all filmmakers on Oscars nomination morning. At the very last minute before announcements, make pancakes. It helps with the stress," he was quoted as saying. "Second, make sure you put enough eggs in the preparation, our pancakes were a disaster."

Outside of best picture, the film's nominations were in largely technical categories including best sound, best costume design, best film editing and best makeup and hairstyling.

A surprising find amongthe best picture, meanwhile, was a nod for the lesser-knownNightmare Alley, which also grabbed nominations for Canadians Luis Sequeirain costume design and achievement in production design for Shane Vieau.

Of the five Canadian short films to make the Oscars' longlist, one Affairs of the Art made it through on Tuesday. The 16-minute animated shortis bydirector Joanna Quinn and writer-producer Les Mills, and continues a series that began in 1987 with the filmGirls Night Out.

Meanwhile, the pandemic's movie saviour,Spider-Man: No Way Home, only managed to snag a single nominationfor best visual effects, despite gigantic box-office success and stellar reviews. Similarly, Marvel'sShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings starring Canadian Simu Liu earned a single nomination in the same category.

The Kristen Stewart-ledSpenceris also up for only a single award (best actress, Stewart's first Oscarnomination),though that continues a surprising trend. While the Princess Diana biopic received early buzz and strong reviews at film festivals, it has been given comparatively little love in the awards circuit, with Stewart left offthe SAG Awards nominee list earlier this year.
