Gangnam Style followup rockets up list of fastest-growing viral videos

K-Pop artist Psy's music video for Gentleman, his followup to the smash Gangnam Style, has garnered more than 60 million online views in just two days since its release.

Korean Pop star Psy seems to be paving his way to further viral video success, with the Gangnam Style singer's new track Gentleman surpassing 60 million views online just two days after its release.

The South Korean singer and rapper unveiled theaudio of Gentleman on Friday(beginning in New Zealand) and followed by releasing a tongue-in-cheek accompanying music video on Saturday, the same day he offered his first performance of the song at a packed concert in Seoul.

Fast-growing viral videos

Buoyed by the success of Gangnam Style, Psy's Gentleman is rocketing up the list of fastest-growing viral videoswith more than 20 million views after its first day of release. Other fast-moversinclude:

  • The "Kony 2012" video, whichamassed more than 100 million video views inabout six days.
  • Uploaded footage of the meteor that struckRussia in February, which in one weekend garnered more than 130 million views on YouTube and other video-sharing sites, according to social analysis firm Visible Measures.
  • Music videos for teen favourite pop sensations like Justin Bieber, whose Beauty and a Beat video surpassed 10 million views in one day, andOne Direction, which garnered more than eight million for the debut of Live While We're Young.

"Of course I feel more burden than before, because lots of people are watching," the performer, born Park Jae-sang, told a news conference before Saturday's concert.

"[The show] is a performance of thanks for the Gangnam Style success."

The well-spoken singer's interviews offer a stark contrast to his brash videos and performances (including a send-up of Beyonc's Single Ladies at his Seoul concert).

The over-the-top music video for Gentleman, which includes song elements reminiscent of Gangnam Style, features Psy running amok by playing pranks on dazzled men, women and kids, from yanking a chair out from under a woman to kicking soccer-playing children's soccer ball out of bounds. He meets his match, however, in a noodle shop.

The video also shows Psy and his dancers performing a hip-swinging, side-galloping dancepresumably aimed to replicate the success of Gangnam Style's pony dance.

Psy had teased fans with tidbits about his new track for weeks, unveiling the name, that he was working on new choreography and discussing the pressure of following up his mind-bogglingly successful Gangnam Style, which surpassed 1.5 billion views on YouTube.
