The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Indian release nixed

David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo won't be shown in Indian cinemasafter censors objected to nudity in the acclaimed crime thriller.

The Hollywood adaptation, based on Stieg Larsson's blockbuster Millennium book trilogy, showcasesupcoming actress Rooney Mara'sOscar-nominated performanceas the tattooed outcast, hacker and investigator. She appears opposite James Bond star Daniel Craig,portraying a crusading journalist who uncovers horrible family secrets during his search for a long-missing woman.

India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedlyobjected to five scenes in the R-rated film, which includes nudity and depictions of rape, violence and sexual intercourse.

"Bare-bottom and bare-breast scenes are not allowed in India," board official J.P. Singh told Agence France-Presse.

"We objected to several scenes in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and wanted them to be blurred."

Sony Pictures declined to make the changes and the film's Indian release, slated for Feb. 10, has been cancelled.

"The censor board has judged the film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form," the studio's Mumbai office said in a statement. "While we are committed to maintaining and protecting the vision of the director, we will, as always, respect the guidelines set by the board."

Fincher's version of Dragon Tattoo, which was made after anoted Swedish film adaptationofLarsson's books, received overwhelmingly positivereviews upon its North American release in December. So far, it has grossed more than $185 million US worldwide.
