Townshend, Daltrey launch tour with acoustic set

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey treated reporters and Who fans to an acoustic, four-song set from London on Thursday as part of their announcement of a European tour.

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey treated reporters to an acoustic,four-song set in London on Thursday as part of their announcement ofa European tour.

The two surviving original members of the Who will kick off their 28-city tour in Lisbon in May. The tour will stop at arenas in 14 different countries, ending in July in Helsinki. The duo also said that after Europe, they hope to continue performing around the world.

Townshend and Daltrey performed classics such as Won't Get Fooled Again as well as newer songs from their 2006 album Endless Wire for the reporters gathered at the music studio in London's Covent Garden, as well as thosewatching the announcement online via the band's official website.

"What holds Roger and I together is the music, and what we realize is that the audience put us there. When they vote us off, we'll go," Townshend said.

"There's a lot of great music out there and one of the things the Who has to do is compete with it."

They also confirmed that the Who will be the headline act on the final night (June 24) of this year's Glastonbury festival.

"I was really so happy to accept," said Townshend, citing how it was also significant for his teenage son.

"It was the coolest thing to happen to me, at 61, to be able to say to him 'Come along bring your mates.' "

In recent years, Daltrey and Townshend began reuniting for several major events, including the London Live 8 concert and a Sept. 11 benefit concert in New York. Last year, the Whoplayed across North America the first major tour in more than two decades.
