A Glasgow sound artist who records her own voice singing pop songs and plays the recordings in stairwells and under bridges has been shortlisted for the Turner Prize.

Tate Britain named four artists for the art prize for young artists on Tuesday:

  • Susan Philipsz, a Glasgow sound installation artist.
  • Dexter Dalwood, a Londoner who creates paintings and collages inspired by historic events.
  • Angela de la Cruz, a Spanish-born painter and sculptor who works in London.
  • The Otolith Group, London-based film artists Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun.

Philipsz's work includes Filter, in which she sang the Radiohead song Airbag over the public address system of a Tesco supermarket in London. She also hasplayed her recordings ofsongs by Nirvana and the Velvet Underground in a bus station.

An exhibitwith her sound installations is now on display at the Guggenheim in New York.

Dalwood is known for paintings that depict the site of the Manson murders and conjure the death of David Kelly, the British weapons expert who killed himself after failing to convince the government that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction.

The Death of David Kelly is a peaceful scene of the spot where Kelly committed suicide, which like the Manson work, features no human figure.

"The absence of the figure evoked in the depicted scene yet directly cited in the title of each work gives the work a striking psychological charge," the Tate said of his paintings.

Sagar and Eshun have created a film that depicts a 22nd century Earth on which humans can't live and another that criticizes capitalism withimages of sweatshop workers contrasted with ads for financial services.

De la Cruz has said she is interested in "freeing painting from the boundaries of its support."

Her works include a collapsed plastic chair and crumpled canvases that hang off their frames.

Work by the Turner Prize nominees goes on display at the Tate on Tuesday and a winner will be declared in Dec. 6.

The Turner exhibit is always popular and the prize itself often goes to controversial or outrageous art. Among the past winners are Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry and Chris Ofili.

Last year's winner was Glasgow-based artist Richard Wright, who created a beautiful fresco in gold leaf.
