Four operations have failed to restore the eyesight of University of British Columbia master's student Rumana Monzur, whose eyes were damaged in June when she was allegedly attacked by her husband in Bangladesh.

Thesurgeries were performed at Vancouver General Hospital in an attempt to establish some vision, but her injuries were found to be beyond repair, said a statement released by school officials Monday morning.

"Monzur has asked the university to convey the news that medical procedures were unable to restore any vision," said the statement.

Monzur's eyes were damaged in early June when she was allegedly attacked by her husband while visiting her family in Bangladesh.

She returned to Vancouver with her father earlier this month for treatment.

"Monzur is looking forward to having her daughter and mother join her soon, and has indicated she will provide comment after she has had some time to recover from surgeries and spend time with her family," said the statement.

Students and staff at UBC have raised about $60,000 to support Monzur and her family during her recovery.
