Moncton shooting: Closures, cancellations, important contacts

The city of Moncton is in a virtual lockdown as New Brunswick RCMP continue their search for suspected gunman Justin Bourque, following the shooting deaths of three Mounties and the wounding of two other officers.

Parts of Moncton are in alockdown as New Brunswick RCMP continue their search for suspected gunman Justin Bourque, following the shooting deaths of three Mounties and the wounding of two other officers.

Businesses and some non-urgent services will not be running as usual, in order to comply with calls by police for citizens to stay indoors for their own protection.

To help police in their manhunt, residents have also been advised to switch on their porch lights as the gets darker.

While tactical teams continue their search, Codiac Transpo said buses will not be in service until further notice. Schools are also closed, as are provincial offices. Municipal services have been cancelled as well.

The Moncton Hospital also advises that it is cancelling elective surgeries scheduled for June 6, and Horizon Health is also delaying elective surgeries.

The Georges DumontHospital is also cancelling non-urgent services, including ambulatory care clinics, diagnostic services and blood tests. Surgeries and dialysis and oncology treatments, however, will continue as usual.

"The city is almost in a state of shutdown," MonctonMayor George LeBlanc told CBC News.

"Of course, we hope it won't be too long, but when it comes tosafety of the people of Moncton, it's an easy call."

The services and businesses that were closed on Thursday are expected to remain closed on Friday, until further notice. A list of closures includes:

  • City hall, Codiac Transpo and the Operations Centre & Moncton Coliseum were closed Thursday.
  • Non-essential government of Canada offices in the region are closed until further notice.
  • No garbage collection in the city of Dieppe.
  • The Anglophone East school district closed all of its schools Thursday.
  • Francophone South school district closed schools in Moncton, Dieppe-Memramcook, Shediac and Bouctouche as a safety precaution.
  • Public transit has been shut down in the city as Codiac Transpo has taken all its buses off the road.
  • The Moncton courthouse also closed for the day.
  • The University of Moncton campus announced it would close for the day. The New Brunswick Community College is also closed.
  • Champlain Place shopping mall is delaying its opening until further notice.
  • Provincial and federal government offices in the Moncton area are also closed Thursday.
  • Canada Post cancelled mail delivery.
  • NB Liquor closed all stores in Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe.
  • YMCA Moncton will not be open at regular operating hours.
