Liberal victories, Blue Jays bring out the memes

Canadians on social media follow early Liberal gains on election night, but a busy night in sports and entertainment seeded some amusing cross-genre banter as well.

Election hashtag fights for the spotlight with Game 3, Star Wars

Canadians have been following the federal election en masse on social media, sharing their thoughts on one of the most dramaticraces in years.

Twitter Canada wrote Monday evening that as of 8:15 p.m. ET,the #elxn42 hashtag hadbeen used more than 340,000 times today.

Soon after the polls closed on the East Coast, big gains by the Liberals dominated much of the discussion amongpolitical junkies online.

But on a night particularly heavy with sports,entertainment news and other events, there was bound to be some cross-genre discussion.

Liberals make early gains in Atlantic Canada

The Liberals took an early lead in the night, either leading or winning seats in most of Atlantic Canada.

Many noted that the Liberals were on their way toexceeding their entire 2011 results (34 seats) onthe East Coast alone. By shortly after 10:30 p.m., CBC News was projecting a Liberal majority government, with the party elected or leading in some 180 ridings.

Dual-screening the election,Jays

But politics wasn't the only hot topic as the TorontoBlue Jays faced the Kansas City Royals inGame 3 of the American League Championship Series.

Twitter Canada noted that many people were tweeting the Jays' hashtag #ComeTogether along with election-related tags, such as #elxn42.

Some posted their two-screen setups from home the game on one screen, election coverage on the other.

At least one soul, Toronto Sun columnist Steve Tilley, dared a three-screen setup: the third dedicated to the newly released trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens
