China launches dark matter detection satellite

China launched a dark matter detection satellite into space on Thursday.

The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite launched into space on a rocket from a launch pad in northwest China.

The country's first space telescope will help scientists search for the mysterious substance known as dark matter.

The DAMPEweighs 1.9 tonnes and will orbit at a height of 500 km. The satellite will scan space in all directions for its first two years in orbit and then hone in on areas where its most likely to observe dark matter.
