The company says the iPad is selling more than twice as fast as the first iPhone touchscreen smartphone.

Apple said it reached the one million milestone on Friday.

"One million iPads in 28 days that's less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone," Apple CEO Steve Jobs saidin a statement.

"Demand continues to exceed supply and we're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers."

The iPad model with the ability to connect to AT&T's 3G cellular data networks went on sale Friday in the U.S. The iPads sold before Friday were able to connect to the internet only through Wi-Fi.

Apple has delayed the international launch of the device until the end of May, saying the U.S. sales were unexpectedly strong. Consumers outside the U.S. will be able to order the iPad starting May 10.
