RIM-India BlackBerry security talks stir debate

The Indian government argues that monitoring communications is necessary in order to combat terrorism. Others, however,say that would undermine personal privacy and corporate security.

Journalist Amol Sharma, New Delhi correspondentfor the Wall Street Journal, recounts the story so far. John Bumgarner, chief technology officer with the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit in Charlotte, N.C., thinks RIM is making a mistake. Nick Shulz, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research in Washington, D.C., believes India's request is reasonable one to protect citizens against terrorism.
