Fidel Castro and fellow rebelshunkered down in a mountain camp in eastern Cuba from roughly 1957 to 1958, with Fulgencio Batista'sforces in pursuit.

A steady stream of runners traversed the rugged terrain to deliver supplies, but none gave away Castro'shiding place.

Castro hid, along with his second-in-command Ernesto(Che)Guevara,in the SierraMaestramountain range before the revolution toppled the dictator Batistawhenhe fled the island nationat the start of 1959.
