European MPs confirm more than 1,000 CIA flights in Europe

European lawmakers say they have documented a series of incidents in which terror suspects have been kidnapped by the CIA in Europe, or handed over to the U.S. agency by European officials.

In a report released Wednesday, members of the European Parliament said the CIA has conducted more than 1,000 undeclared flights over European territory since Sept. 11, 2001.

The report concludes that some flights were carrying suspected terrorists to countries, such as Afghanistan and Iraq, where they could face torture.

The report, written by Italian Socialist member of the European Parliament Claudio Fava, singled out Sweden, Italy and Bosnia (which is not an EU member), for particular criticism.

"The CIA has, on several occasions, clearly been responsible for kidnapping and illegally detaining alleged terrorists on the territory of [EU] member states, as well as for extraordinary renditions," said the MEP.

The parliamentary committee spent more than three months collecting information from top EU officials, magistrates, human-rights activists and people who said they were abducted by the CIA.

The U.S. has admitted some suspects were flown overseas for interrogation, but has always denied subjecting them to torture.

Fava's committee will now start investigating allegations of secret prisons in Europe. The committee plans to visit countries such as Romania and Poland later this year.
