'I'm just over the moon,' Prince Harry says after wife Meghan gives birth to boy

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, gave birth to a boy today, and Prince Harry says he's "incredibly proud" of his wife, and their first child who's seventh in line for the throne is "absolutely to die for."

Prince Harry and Meghan are first-time parents after theDuchess of Sussex gave birth early today with her husband by her side.

Their sonwas born at 5:26 a.m. BST(12:26 a.m. ET)and weighedseven pounds, three ounces, Buckingham Palace said.

The newborn, who has yet to be named, is the Queen's eighth great-grandchild andseventh in line to the throne.

Harry, 34, the Duke of Sussex, saidMeghan, 37, and their sonare doing well.

Prince Harry said he's 'incredibly proud' of his wife Meghan after she gave birth to the couple's first child, a son, on Monday.

In announcing the birth to reporters in Windsor, Harry said the child was a "bit overdue," and that had given them more time to contemplate names. He saidhe'secstatic about the birth and said more details will be shared in the coming days."This little baby is absolutely to die for," he said. "I'm just over the moon."

Senior royals have been informed of the birth, as has the family of Diana, Princess of Wales, Harry's late mother.

Buckingham Palace also said:"The duchess's mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage."

The couplemoved into nearby Frogmore Cottage, a royal residence on the grounds where they held their wedding reception.

A formal baby announcement was posted at Buckingham Palace saying Queen Elizabethwelcomed the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan's son.

A pair of uniformed staff members placed the framed announcement on an easel just inside the palace gates Monday afternoon, observing a long tradition hours after the new prince's arrival was announced.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was formerly known as Meghan Markle and was on the TV show Suits before retiring from acting to marry Harry at St. George's Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle,in the English county of Berkshire, a year ago.

Journalists and well-wishers have been camped out for days in Windsor, about 35 kilometreswest of London, awaiting the birth.

British Prime Minister Theresa May congratulated the royal couple on the birth of their son, tweeting: "Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the arrival of their baby boy. Wishing you all the best at this happy time."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a tweet that Harry and Meghan should "enjoy every minute"of their "time together as a new family of three."

There is no word yet on what Canada is giving as a present for the newborn.

His older cousins, the children of Prince William and Kate,were all welcomed with $100,000 donations to charities and some Canadian-made gifts.

Prince George received a handcrafted blanket and mukluks in 2013, Princess Charlotte was given a Canada Goose snowsuit in 2015 and Prince Louis was given a traditional Haida blanket in 2018.
