Haiti's cholera outbreak has claimed at least 1,344 lives and sent more than 23,000 people to hospital, a United Nations official says.

Elizabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the UN office for the co-ordination of humanitarian affairs, said the figures were provided by the Haitian government and cover the period up to Nov. 19.

Aid agencies are working with government officials to slow the spread of the diarrheal disease, but several organizations have said there is an urgent need formore supplies to prevent and treat the disease.

Haitians,many of whom are still struggling to rebuild after January's devastating earthquake,are scheduled to head to the polls Sundayto elect a new president, as well as several senators and deputies.
