UN accepts responsibility for Rwanda genocide

Members of the United Nations Security Council are taking some responsibility for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

They vowed to do more to prevent similar atrocities, especially with the new UN mission to Congo.

This was the first formal response to a report that criticized the UN's role in Rwanda. The report said world leaders lacked the political will to stop the massacre of half a million minority Tutsis.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy organized the meeting. He said the killings made a mockery of the holocaust pledge, "never again."
