Beyond the puffin

No trees, no bandwidth and no airtime were spared in the effort to spotlight the Conservatives' now-infamous puffin web-gag-gone-wrong yesterday.

But there's been considerably less discussion about something else on this site — in the lower right-hand corner of notaleader.ca.

When you click on the little chalk drawing of the man with the gun, you'll see video from one of Michael Ignatieff's old documentaries. In the video, he attempts to shoot a target with an assault rifle. He misses, and has to get a tribal war lord to show him how it's done.

It's not too much of a stretch, surely, to ask if this is in even worse taste than that pooping puffin. Especially from the Conservatives, who manage to crusade against gun violence and champion legal gun ownership in alternate breaths.

Whatever tensions remain between the Ignatieff and the Dion leadership camps, who finds it funny to imagine political opponents firing at their opponents, literally?

Nevertheless, yesterday it was all-puffin, all-the-time. The Liberal bus caught on to it first, and Harper's prompt remarks about pulling it completed the story arc du jour.

The gauche gun-firing remains on the site.
