Iceland volcano: Photos from the eruption site

An ash cloud billows out behind a tranquil farmhouse in southern Iceland. Submitted by  Guomundur Ingi Jonsson.

Guomundur Ingi Jonsson was part of a helicopter crew that visited the volcano at southern Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull glacier.

Jonsson says seeing the volcano up close was chilling.

"I had a very strange feeling, being so close to the volcano and seeing all the volcanic ash over everything, The wind was blowing very fast, it was hard to stand up right. The ash seemed to be bonded together into a solid block. Being there gave me the chills. Made me think of doomsday. The strength of the volcano seems to be less now. The ash fallout is coming down in a sparsely populated area, so very few people are affected by it. In fact, 99 per cent of people in Iceland are unaffected by this eruption, except for people trying to fly to Europe."

Watch video of the helicopter landing.

He managed to capture some stunning images of the continued eruption, including photos of the rising ash that has grounded many airlines.
