How Iron Man 3, Monsters University and other summer mega-hits fared at the foreign box office, by country

The latest instalments in the Fast & Furious and Star Trek movie franchises had a similar summer.

They each cost more than $150 million to make, received a fairly warm critical reception on release and earned between $225 million and $240 million at the box office in Canada and the U.S.

But when it comes to the films' global business, a startingly different picture emerges.

Where Star Trek earned a respectable $231 million overseas, Fast & Furious took home a whopping $548 million abroad, according to figures from the Box Office Mojo database.

North American success didn't automatically translate into big bucks around the world for all the summer's top blockbusters.

The Sandra Bullock comedy The Heat earned $49 million outside the American and Canadian markets. Or put another way, a little less than half of what Iron Man 3 earned in China alone.

The latest Tony Stark adventure was the undisputed champion of the overseas box office, raking in a staggering $805 million in foreign markets.
