Salt reduction: Share your tips and tricks

salty-salt.jpgCanadians consume more sodium than they need, contributing to high incidences of high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease, according to a Health Canada working group.

The Sodium Working Group, which includes representatives from government, the food industry and health professionals, will release details Thursday about a national strategy to reduce sodium consumption.

Canadian adults shouldn't consume more than five millilitres of salt (2,300 milligrams of sodium or a teaspoon of salt) per day, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. However, most adults consume far more than the recommended amount of sodium - a little more than 3,000 milligrams on average.
