For drivers, changing your car's oil every 5,000 kilometres is a frequently heard rule of thumb.

But newer engines and improved oil technology mean that most cars are able to go several thousand more kilometers before needing an oil change, CBC's Alex Freedman says.

In recent years, some car manufacturers have adjusted their maintenance guidelines to reflect this. Toyota Canada, for example, recommends an oil change every 8,000 kilometres on its website.

Many companies that provide fast oil changes, however, still push the old industry standard and advertise that oil should be refreshed every 5,000 kilometres.
