Star Wars creator George Lucas has confirmed that all six films in the sci-fi saga will be converted into 3D.

"There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the Star Wars saga has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive," read a statement on the franchise's official website.

The move to 3D comes on the heels of wildly successful movies such as James Cameron's Avatar and Pixar's Toy Story 3. Both 3D films have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is expected to be released sometime in 2012, according to the website.
