$1.60 albums: Would a low price encourage you to buy?

A former major record label boss thinks the solution to fighting online music piracy is to sell albums for as low as the equivalent of $1.60 Cdn, according to a BBC report.

Rob Dickins ran Warner music in the U.K. from 1983-98, and worked with a number of artists like Madonna and REM.

Dickins believes that if record labels decided to sell new albums as low as $1.60, fans wouldn't think twice about making the purchase, rather than downloading the music free, and the resulting sales would offset the low sticker price.

Opponents to this low-ball approach suggest that by selling an album for the same price as a bottle of water, it loses its value and would lead to disinterest from fans.
