Separate surveys by two organizations have come to the conclusion that Canadians will spend about $600 on Christmas gifts this year.
NPD Group, a market research company, came up with the figure of $599 based on a survey of 1,985 Canadians.
Maritz Canada, a customer loyalty firm, concluded Canadians would spend $602 based on a survey of 1,525 adults. Both surveys are accurate within three percentage points 19 times out of 20.
Average spending of $600 represents a six per cent increase over spending on Christmas 2008.
