The hometown Edmonton Oilers will debut the newest addition to their team tonight at the Rexall Centre in a match against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Globe and Mail reported Monday.
Starting tonight, the Edmonton Oilers will have an official cheer squad, and according to NHL.com will announce its name at the game tonight.
The squad consists of 19 women, between the ages of 18 and 29. More than 100 women auditioned for the cheer squad, which will interact with the audience in the concourse before the game, as well as leading cheers throughout the game. It will be the first cheer squad in the NHL.
Though many are eagerly anticipating the new cheer squad, the idea of its introduction has troubled others. An online petition denouncing the hockey team's proposed introduction of a cheer squad has garnered more than 1, 000 signatures suggesting the women will not improve the game experience, and will instead hinder the traditional Edmonton Oilers' home-game experience. You can read the online petition for yourself here.
Since the initial petition was created, those in favour have created their own petition and a Facebook page in defence of the squad.
