Holiday shopping: How much will you spend?

Canadians are bouncing back from their cautious holiday shopping of 2008 and 2009 with plans to boost spending by 8.6 per cent this year, a new survey suggests.

Canadian adults plan to spend $968 each on Christmas gifts and other holiday outlays this year, up from $891 in 2009 and $884 in 2008, the Bank of Nova Scotia said Thursday. The figures are based on a Harris/Decima online survey.

The figure is much higher than the $600 reported by two other recent surveys, which predicted a six per cent increase.

The survey found that about two-thirds of the total spending is for gifts and one-third for other seasonal purchases.

Seasonal spending is predicted to range from a high of $1,388 in Alberta to a low of $766 in Quebec.

Harris/Decima did 1,001 online surveys from a random sample of its panel members between Oct. 25 and Nov. 2. Because it is based on an online survey, the bank's report does not provide margins of error.
