A major subway problem in Toronto during Wednesday's morning rush hour led to a flurry of angry messages on Twitter.

Subway service on the west-to-east Bloor-Danforth line was halted for almost 90 minutes, delaying thousands of commuters and forcing some to look for alternate transit routes or hail cabs.

Many upset commuters used Twitter to vent their frustrations. "TTC" and "Bloor-Danforth" were among the top trending search terms in Twitter among Canadians.

"Left Christie station," tweeted ratsamy. "45 minutes with no one getting on the train was too much. Now calling cab for expensive trip to work."

Rxmxa tweeted she "waited 25 minutes on the subway platform only for an Out of Service train to pass by. Way to piss on your riders, #TTC."

Some Twitter users managed to minimize their delays by tracking TTC service updates and following people's tweets about trouble spots.

"Twitter told me the subway was a mess, so I'm taking the bus to work," wrote robotpilot.

User Paolo Alvendia thought the social networking platform was incredibly helpful during the transit outage. "Thank god for twitter's real time updates."

How do you get your transit and traffic updates? Have social networking platforms like Twitter ever helped you avoid a travel mess? Let us know in the comments below.
