The Toronto Sun on Thursday published a picture sent by a reader of a TTC bus driver driving while texting on a mobile device. (Toronto Sun)The Toronto Transit Commission is coming under fire after the emergence of a picture that shows a bus driver texting on a mobile device while driving in the city's north end.
The picture was taken by a TTC rider on his iPhone Wednesday afternoon. It was published by the Toronto Sun on Thursday evening.
"I think the photograph speaks for itself. We are very concerned about it," TTC spokesman
Brad Ross told CBC's Metro Morning on Friday.
Ross said it was an isolated incident, and the TTC has begun an internal investigation.
In Ontario, it has been illegal to use hand-held devices while driving since October 2009 .
A driver caught in the act is subject to a fine of $155. Anyone challenging the ticket may have the fine lowered to $50 or raised to $500 at the judge's discretion.
Some CBCNews.ca readers disagreed with Ross's statement that this was an isolated incident.
"This is certainly not [an] "isolated incident," flumeboy04 wrote. "I've seen drivers using cellphones before and complained to TTC about it. Let's see how serious the TTC is about safety by watching what happens to this (and other) drivers who are caught in the act."
Community member MarsBolt reported a similar incident to the TTC about nine months ago.
"I am continuously seeing drivers using cell phones while driving and have little doubt they and others would be text messaging as well," wrote forest grump. "This blatant 'the law applies to everybody but me' stuff has to be brought to an end. It's high time for police to start laying charges for all infractions they see, not just the ones they happen to deem severe enough to merit the paperwork."
Do you often see your local public transit drivers behaving badly? If you have any pictures, videos or anecdotes of public transit incidents, we'd love to see them. Send them to yournews@cbc.ca.
