Arcade Fire was surprise winner of the top prize at the Grammy Awards -- album of the year for The Suburbs. The group won despite missing out on two awards earlier in the evening.
"I just want to say thank you, merci, to Montreal, Quebec, for taking us and giving us a home and place to be in a band," singer Win Butler said in his acceptance speech.
The band faced stiff competition from rapper Eminem, outrageous chart-topper Lady Gaga, country group Lady Antebellum and pop singer Katy Perry.
Arcade Fire was also nominated in the categories of best rock performance by a duo or group with vocals, and best alternative music album. The Black Keys won both those awards.
Meanwhile, teen sensation Justin Bieber, from Stratford, Ont., and Toronto rapper Drake were shut out of the Grammys. Both were up for an award in the best new artist category but lost to jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding.
