Our story on the salaries paid university presidents in Nova Scotia is creating a lot of buzz.

The story was picked up by other media outlets, from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald to Macleans.ca. And dozens have left comments on our website.

We decided to publish the salaries because university funding is a major issue in our province. NSCAD is facing a multi-million dollar deficit and a possible merger, tuitions are rising and the provincial government has told the schools they'll be getting less money this year.

On top of that, the Association of University Teachers says salary increases for senior administrators are "out of step what is given to faculty and support staff".

Under new legislation, beginning in September, universities will have to make the information public. Getting it now wasn't easy. We had to contact each of the 11 schools in the province - some were slow in responding - and as of today  (Friday) one, St. FX., is still refusing to reveal what is pays President Sean Riley.

The salaries range from a low of $103,925 (Atlantic School of Theology) to $393,264 (Dalhousie University).

That information seems to have struck a nerve.

There is a vigorous debate going on in the comments section of our story. The reaction ranges from "piggies at the trough" to "if you compare these salaries to CEO's in the private sector...these guys are a bargain".
