Where are all the guns coming from?

Halifax has a gun problem.
 
If you are a regular reader of this blog, you'll know we've been tracking the growing use of guns throughout HRM.

The numbers are disturbing: 75 shooting incidents in 2011, and so far, the eight shootings this year put us on pace to see even more violence in 2012.
 
It seems this is a homegrown problem.  Police say the guns showing up on our streets aren't being smuggled in from the U-S or central Canada. They are being taken in robberies in homes throughout Nova Scotia.
 
Two recent cases tell that story.
 
On Tuesday, two masked men kicked in the door of a gun collector in Sambro. 63 year old David Whalen was beaten, his common-law wife was tied up and shoved to the floor, as the thugs ransacked his gun locker stealing seven rifles. They didn't take anything else - they only wanted his guns.
 
A couple of weeks ago, in the community of Barton, Digby County, another home robbery, with a much a bigger haul. In this case the thieves hit the jackpot: 25 rifles and shotguns.
 
Police say all of these guns will probably end up on the streets of Halifax. Sawed-off and modified, the perfect concealed weapon.
