7 Books For Little Truck Lovers

BY JEN KOSSOWAN, MAMA.PAPA.BUBBA

If you’ve got a little one who loves trucks as much as my little one does, chances are you’ve read countless books filled with illustrations of backhoes, concrete mixers, mobile cranes and tank trucks. We’ve learned about so many types of trucks that I can now confidently say I know the difference between a regular dump truck and an articulated dump truck (win!), but sometimes you just need a book with a bit of a storyline. Am I right?

Here is my go-to list of truck books to read to preschoolers. This list is loosely ordered from the simplest story with the least text to the longest story with the most text, though my busy two-year-old will happily sit through an entire reading of any of these books, and chances are, your little truck lover will too!

Love Is A Truck (By Amy Novesky, Illustrated By Sara Gillingham)

Book cover: Love is a Truck by Amy Novesky & illustrated by Sara Gillingham

Oh how I adore this little book! While definitely the simplest storyline, Love is a Truck perfectly depicts the joy and play that trucks of all kinds bring those who adore them. The story follows a day in the life of a little truck lover as he or she plays in the dirt with diggers and dump trucks, enjoys a treat from the ice cream truck, lines up her truck collection from big to small and eventually goes to sleep clutching a fire engine. The thick, sturdy pages are filled with gorgeous illustrations done in a palette of reds, browns, blacks and whites. This book, paired with a red fire engine, will make a perfect toddler gift.

Red Truck (By Kersten Hamilton, Illustrated By Valeria Petrone)

A charming little book about how Red Truck, a determined tow truck, saves the day when a bus becomes stuck during a storm and begins sliding back down the hill it’s trying to climb. The story is filled with onomatopoeias (like ring, zoom and sploosh!) that are great for encouraging little ones to chime in. The colourful vehicle illustrations pop perfectly against the more muted background colours. It’s definitely a must-read for truck loving toddlers.

Truck Stuck (By Sallie Wolf, Illustrated By Andy Robert Davies)

Book cover: Truck Stuck by Sallie Wolf & illustrated by Andy Robert Davies

Quite possibly my favourite truck book to read aloud! Its rhyme and rhythm are fantastic and make Truck Stuck truly enjoyable to read over and over again. The story is about a big rig that gets terribly stuck when it drives under a viaduct that is too low. Chaos ensues, but then the problem solving begins and eventually the truck is made free with some creative thinking and the help of the surrounding community. Definitely worth adding to your little truck lover’s collection!

Little Blue Truck (By Alice Schertle, Illustrated By Jill McElmurry)

Book cover: Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle & illustrated by Jill McElmurry

Easily the most requested truck book in our house and I don’t mind one bit!  This heartwarming tale follows Blue, a friendly little blue truck, as he makes his way through the countryside making time to greet the animals he passes. Blue demonstrates true kindness when a rude dump truck comes roaring through and ends up getting stuck and as a result, a lesson is learned by everyone. If your little one is anything like mine, you’ll be reading this book over and over for weeks to come.

Little Blue Truck Leads The Way (By Alice Schertle, Illustrated By Jill McElmurry)

Book cover: Little Blue Truck Leads the Way by Alice Schertle & illustrated by Jill McElmurry

Another Little Blue Truck book, but it deserves to be on the list just as much as the first! In this adventure, country Blue heads into the busier, faster, noisier city where he finds himself amidst a major traffic jam. In true Blue fashion, he helps solve the problem with kindness and as a result, the people of the city learn that a little bit of patience and kindness go a long way. With fantastic rhyme and rhythm, Little Blue Truck Leads the Way is every bit as fun to read aloud as the original is.

Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site (By Sherri Duckey Rinker, Illustrated By Tom Lichtenheld)

Book cover: Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duckey Rinker & illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

The perfect bedtime story! As the sun begins to set on the construction site, the hard working trucks finish up their tasks and begin to wind down after a busy day of work. One by one, Crane Truck, Cement Mixer, Dump Truck, Bulldozer and Excavator say goodnight so they’ll be ready for tomorrow for another day of work and play. With rhyming text, beautiful illustrations and a nice, calm finish, you and your little truck lover will be reading this book every night before bed.

Mighty, Mighty Construction Site (By Sherri Duckey Rinker, Illustrated By Tom Lichtenheld)

Book cover: Mighty, Mighty Construction Site by Sherri Duckey Rinker & illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

The much awaited sequel to Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site! This time around, Crane Truck, Cement Mixer, Dump Truck, Bulldozer and Excavator are back at the construction site and gearing up for their biggest project yet — a job so big that they have to call in reinforcements. Focused on friendship and teamwork, this sweet story will surely become a favourite.

Well, there they are! Seven books little truck lovers are sure to adore. Which titles would you add to the list?
