Catching up on reading? If social media is any indicator, that seems to be one of the things people are doing as we socially distance from each other.
Whether you're letting Josh Gad (Frozen's Olaf, though I'm sure you're well aware of that) tell your kids a story on Twitter, or swapping books via the mailbox with your neighbours, stories are a great way for kids to pass the time as these days turn into weeks.
So instead of one book list, here are nine book lists that run the gamut from old to new for ages 0 to 18 covering topics like: self-esteem, dads, sharing, types of families, the autism spectrum, anxiety, classics, gender and disabilities.
8 Children’s Books That Celebrate Individuality And Help Build Self-Esteem
"On days when my little guy needs a boost, we still reach for I Like Myself!, and over time, we’ve added a few more confidence-building books to our home library as well. Here are a few of our favourite finds." Ages 0 to 8.
8 Children’s Books That Celebrate A Variety Of Different Dads
"With humour and tenderness and inclusivity, children’s book authors are celebrating good dads — in all their different forms — and the special bond that they share with their kids." Ages 0 to 8.
7 Great Picture Books That Encourage Kids To Share
"Sharing is caring, as the saying goes, but it can also be a little complicated sometimes." Ages 2 to 8.
5 Amazing Books About All Different Types Of Families
"These five books — specifically about families — touch on all kinds of familial compositions and living situations and are not only enjoyable to read, but they’re also a great jumping off point for discussions both at school and at home." Ages 0 to 11.
5 Picture Books That Represent Kids On The Autism Spectrum
"This list of five picture books are some of my favourites. You'll notice there is plenty of diversity shown in these books, too — from how the characters are depicted in art, to how the viewpoints are portrayed in their words." Ages 3 to 10.
Librarians Recommend: 15 Books For Kids Dealing With Anxiety
"But sometimes the best books are the fictional (or mostly fictional) stories showing how others have been able to work with or mediate their own fears and challenges, stories that offer inspiration or even just recognize that others face similar struggles." Ages 2 to 12+.
Librarians Recommend: 8 Classic Children’s Books That Stand The Test Of Time
"Here are recommendations from librarians across the country of classics that still hold up, with a more modern perspective." Ages 4 to 12+.
Librarians Recommend: 10 Books That Deal With Gender Identity Or Sexuality
"For some kids, checking out these titles can allow them to see themselves or familiar people represented on the page. This might mean a way to understand or process their own feelings or thoughts, or just give them a main character in whom they can recognize themselves." Ages 8 to 13+.
5 Surprising Chapter Books That Feature Disabilities And Neurodiverse Characters
"Unfortunately, it's tough to find books that feature disabled and/or neurodiverse characters in the first place. And it's even more rare to find good books on those topics. Books that are positive, authentic and real." Ages 6 to 18.
