What Gym Equipment Should I Own?

BY LUCY D'AGUILAR, FIT & EATS

Exercising at home can be an amazing resource if you are short on time or can’t afford a gym membership. Let's face it, both working and stay-at-home parents are constantly running out of time, trying to juggle all the daily activities and a full-time job can be a struggle. For me, having a space and some equipment to use at home is the best way to fit in a quick workout. So why not experiment at home with some in-home workouts?

The problem arises when we don’t have the space or perhaps don’t want to make space for a home gym-style setup. Knowing what equipment to buy as well as what is going to get you the most bang for your buck can be difficult. In my opinion, you don’t need all the fancy equipment with bells and whistles (I don’t). Don’t get me wrong, if I had the money and the space I would probably have it all — I’m a little addicted.

Setting up a mini gym at home is actually quite easy, depending on your budget. The key to buying equipment is to get items that you can adapt and use in multiple ways without taking up too much space. I have lots of tools in my tool bag, but I tend to only use a few of them because they are quick and easy to get out and you can hide them in a drawer or in an ottoman.

Here are my top three pieces to own:

Resistance bands

My FAVOURITE thing to own! These bands come in different strengths and sizes. You can get straight bands or loop bands, bands with handles and bands without. All have their pros and cons, but they are so small and easy to store that you can own a few different kinds. They are also cheap! The straight bands with handles are by far my favourite to use. You can do so many different exercises with them including rehabilitation exercises and compound exercises (think squats or lunges), you can also alter the resistance according to where you hold/stand on the band.

Dumbbells/Kettlebells

Now dumbbells and kettlebells are a little bulky to store, but they are such a useful tool to have in your gym bag. If you are looking to tone your muscles and get good definition, it is important to add some heavier weights into your routine. I wouldn't bother with low weights as the resistance band can be used for this. Aim for a 15–20 pound set so that you can use them for big muscle exercises like deadlifts and chest press.

TRX system

This system is by far the most versatile piece of equipment you can own. It was designed by a Navy SEAL to use when he was out on deployment in order to stay in peak condition (I am not getting commission for writing this). I don’t personally own this yet, but it is on my to-get list. There are endless exercises you can do on this ONE piece of equipment!

Interval Timer

As an added bonus, an interval timer can prove to be very useful. This little piece of equipment is great for when you are completing a HIIT workout. It means you can power through without having to worry about your phone screen turning off. Set the timer to the desired intervals and press go, then the timer will beep at each marked point, e.g. 60 seconds and 30 seconds. You can get a physical timer or download an app on your phone.
