Art Project for Kids: Chalk Drawings on Felt

By Dyan Robson, And Next Comes L

One craft supply that I always have on hand is felt. I usually use it to make felt board sets or for sewing quiet book pages, but sometimes, I manage to find other uses for it. Like this chalk and felt art that I'm going to show you.

The inspiration for this art project was rather accidental. A friend of mine and her two kids were over for a play date when someone, either my two year old or her two year old, drew all over our felt board with chalk. The chalk, however, still hasn't been fully removed from our felt board, but wow, did the two materials ever look neat together. So I set up this craft for my boys using black felt and chalk. My two year old was interested in this art project for a whole two seconds or so and that was about it. My four year old, J, on the other hand, took his time to carefully craft a beautiful piece of art.First, J drew some letters on the felt. He thought it would act like a real chalkboard and that we could erase the letters. He was a bit frustrated by this idea at first, but soon continued on.

J started to draw a rainbow over top of his letters, happily naming the colours as he drew them.

He then continued to layer some more chalk on the felt by scribbling little designs in different colours.

Once J declared that he was all done, he proudly held up his final artwork for me to snap a picture. Ta-da!
