Capital City Scavenger Hunt: Victoria, British Columbia

By Kevin Naulls, CBC Parents Staff

Mar 28, 2022

Last week we kicked off the CBC Parents Capital City Scavenger Hunt series with Whitehorse, Yukon

Today, we're headed to Victoria, British Columbia.

And as I came to learn while researching all of these great Canadian capital cities, there is so much worth exploring.

In Victoria, you and the little ones will have a great time looking for peacocks, float planes and ferry boats. It will be a complete explosion of colour.

But the colourblast continues with the variety of totem poles Victoria has on display. The illustration in this scavenger hunt takes inspiration from the Knowledge Totem at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, but if you find a different one, that's OK too!

You'll also be tasked with discovering Fan Tan Alley, a stunning focal point of Victoria's Chinatown

The goal of each scavenger hunt is to provide an opportunity for local discovery. Be a tourist in your own city, or use the scavenger hunt to fuel your tourism if you're on a family trip.

If you need some help, there's a handy map at the bottom of this post that will show you some good spots to start looking!

Not in Victoria?

I know not everyone is flying out to places these days, but I don't want that to stop you from having a great time with this scavenger hunt (and the 12 more to come!). Here are some thoughts to make Victoria come to you:

  • Print out the printable below and cut out each item. If you don't have a printer, check out your local library.
  • Once you've cut out each item, hide the items around your home, some in trickier places than others. If you have access to some outdoor space (backyard, public park, etc.), choose a nice day and hide them outside.
  • When your little ones are done collecting the items (either print out a second sheet for them to keep track, or have the printable up on a device), it's a great opportunity to research some of the landmarks on Google Maps. What do the items look like in real life?
  • After that, if any of the items inspire questions from your kids, do a bit of further research with them. Each scavenger hunt is an invitation to honour and celebrate places across Canada!
