Capital City Scavenger Hunt: Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

By Kevin Naulls, CBC Parents Staff

Apr 4, 2022

It's the third stop of the CBC Parents Capital City Scavenger Hunt series.

And this time, we're in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

For this hunt, there is plenty to see in nature, from the local ravens to the beautiful birch trees.

But try your luck finding Elon Muskox, a sculpture named by Yellowknifers! It's a public work of art made from living ingredients — the fuzzy surface is made from sprouted plants and will make the ox look shaggier over time.

You'll make your way to Great Slave Lake, where colourful houseboats dot the water, and maybe from there you'll weave through residential streets to find a green lampost. Your route is entirely up to you!

Thanks to some assistance from CBC North, there's a great sampling of Yellowknife's beauty to explore — can you find all nine items?

At the bottom of this post, you'll see a Google map that will give you some tips on where to start looking!

Not in Yellowknife?

I know not everyone is flying out to places these days, but I don't want that to stop you from having a great time with this scavenger hunt (and the 11 more to come!). Here are some thoughts to make Yellowknife come to you:

  • Print out the printable below and cut out each item. If you don't have a printer, check out your local library.
  • Once you've cut out each item, hide the items around your home, some in trickier places than others. If you have access to some outdoor space (backyard, public park, etc.), choose a nice day and hide them outside.
  • When your little ones are done collecting the items (either print out a second sheet for them to keep track, or have the printable up on a device), it's a great opportunity to research some of the landmarks on Google Maps. What do the items look like in real life?
  • After that, if any of the items inspire questions from your kids, do a bit of further research with them. Each scavenger hunt is an invitation to honour and celebrate places across Canada!
