Change Up Winter Play With A Snow Maze

BY DYAN ROBSON, AND NEXT COMES L

One of our favorite ways to play with a heap of fresh snow is to make a snow maze. It's a perfect backyard activity to do as a family, and it's a nice alternative to making a snowman or going sledding.

Making a snow maze is so easy to do! Simply shuffle, stomp and walk in itty-bitty steps to form trails for the maze. Then walk back and forth over the paths a few times to make sure that the snow gets packed down. Be sure to make lots of dead ends too.

My kids really enjoy making long winding paths all around our backyard every time we make a snow maze, so the finished maze ends up being quite large when we're done designing it. As an alternative, you could always head to a local park and design a snow maze in the fields with the kids. Imagine how gigantic the maze could be in a space like that — I know that my kids would be in heaven!

Then mark the starting point and end point of the maze, and encourage your kids to find their way through it. Sometimes my kids like to add obstacles to the maze to block off previously open corridors, trying to make the maze trickier to complete.

Days later, if no new snow has arrived, the kids can add new paths to the maze too. So our mazes often end up more intricate after a few days of play. And if it does end up snowing and covering up the maze, simply create a new one!
