Chirp Craft: Birdhouse and Nesting Materials

Apr 20, 2015

In honour of our feathered friends from Chirp, Patty and Sid built a special little birdhouse and filled it with lots of materials and objects that a bird could use to create a nest. Make your own birdhouse and fill it with nesting materials to help the birds in your backyard.

What You'll Need:

  • popsicle sticks
  • white glue
  • string or ribbon
  • materials for birds: bird seed, string, yarn, fabric scraps, twigs, dry grass, feathers

Instructions:

1.  Start by building the floor of the birdhouse. The floor should be as long as one popsicle stick. Line up as many popsicle sticks as you need, then glue the edges together. Set aside to dry.

2. Next, build the two sides of the roof. Each side should be a little bit longer than the floor. Line up the popsicle sticks, glue the edges together and set aside to dry.

3. To make the walls of the birdhouse, use four popsicle sticks to make a square. Put a dab of glue on the corners of two popsicle sticks and place two more popsicle sticks across.

Make a number of these squares. Glue them on top of each other to create the walls. Add popsicle sticks to the side of your birdhouse to make little perches for birds to stand on.

4. Time to assemble the birdhouse! Glue the walls to the floor and add the roof. Once the glue is dry, thread a long piece of string or ribbon through the roof.

5. Fill the birdhouse with small objects that birds like. Try bird seed, string, twigs, little pieces of fabric, dry grass or feathers.

6. Hang your birdhouse outside. Keep it stocked with nesting materials throughout the spring and watch for new bird nests in your neighbourhood!
