Christmas Craft for Kids: Tissue Paper Mosaic Ornaments

Christmas is my favourite time of year when it comes to crafting here in my daycare. The materials that the hooligans and I use for most of our crafting are inexpensive, and most times, are items you already have around your home. We love to repurpose our recyclables, and we like to keep our projects simple enough for even the youngest crafters to do, but pretty enough for everyone to enjoy. Recently we used a plastic vinegar container and some tissue paper scraps to make these beautiful Christmas Tree Ornaments.

What you need:

• translucent plastic container (a vinegar, juice or milk jug would work well)
• scissors
• coloured tissue paper cut into small squares
• glue stick
• glitter glue
• paint brush
• hole punch
• ribbon

How we made our ornaments: I started by cutting a circle out of the front and back of my vinegar container. To see how we extended the life of our plastic jug even further, be sure to pop over and check out our milk jug bird feeders! The hooligans coated the front of their circles with a glue stick. Then they covered their ornament with the small squares of tissue paper. It was handy at times to use a paint brush to make sure all of the edges were well stuck in the glue.

Once our ornaments were dry, (I often use a hair dryer to help speed they drying process up), we cut around our our circles to trim off any tissue paper that extended past the edge of the ornaments. This is a great exercise for little ones who are working on their scissor skills. Tissue paper is easy to cut through, so it's a great material for beginners to learn on, and following the edge of the circle adds challenging element for children whose scissor skills are a little more advanced. With the edges trimmed off, it was time to add some "bling"! The hooligans brushed on a coat of glitter glue which added a sparkly shimmer to their ornaments.

Once everything had dried, we punched a hole in the top of each circle, and added some metallic ribbon for hanging.
