Cupcake-Liner Poppy Bouquet

With Halloween behind us and the holiday season on its way, my little one and I are currently taking some time to recognize Remembrance Day. It’s definitely a big topic for a four-year old, but we have a few age-appropriate books that we read each year and we tend to focus on gratefulness and being proud of the wonderful country we’re lucky enough to call ‘home’, despite currently living overseas. This year, we created a beautiful bouquet of cupcake liner poppies in honour of Remembrance Day. While the project yields gorgeous results, it’s extremely simple and only requires a handful of basic supplies, which I just love. It’s also a great one for building hand strength and fine motor skills, so it’s really a winner all around!

What you’ll need:

• red cupcake liners in both the regular and small size
• black card stock or construction paper
• green pipe cleaners
• scissors
• a pencil

1.  To begin, gently flip your cupcake liners inside out so that the red side is inside the cup and the white side is on the outside.  This can be done several at a time.

2.  Next, cut around the tops of the liners with a wavy line in order to make them better resemble flowers.

3.  Now cut out several black circles.  You’ll probably want these to be about the size of a quarter.

4. Moving onto your pipe cleaners, tie a loose knot at the top of each, approximately an inch from the tip.

5.  Now you’re ready to assemble your poppies!  Using the wire inside to pierce the paper, slide a large cupcake liner onto the pipe cleaner until it rests on the knot.  Next, add a small cupcake liner, and then a black circle.

6.  Secure all of the pieces by twisting the remaining length of pipe cleaner into a small ball or circle.

7.  Repeat several times until you have a full bouquet of poppies!  Place them in a vase and display them somewhere in your home for all to see.
