Easy DIY Ornaments for Young Kids

Every year, I like to make at least one Christmas ornament for my kids. I also like to encourage my kids to make Christmas ornaments of their own, as they make a great gift for the grandparents. Here's a simple Christmas tree ornament that kids can make in under ten minutes.

For this Christmas ornament craft, you will need:

  • white craft glue (Elmer's school glue works perfectly!)
  • brown ric-rac ribbon
  • green wooden triangles of various sizes (I bought a container of wooden shapes from the dollar store)
  • sequins
  • scissors

Before assembling the ornament, we discussed and compared the sizes of the wooden triangles. I then encouraged the boys to arrange them in order of size. Nothing like squeaking in a quick math lesson, right?

My boys layered the wooden triangles, starting with the largest on the bottom, adding a bit of white craft glue to the top of each triangle as they went. Then they glued on some sparkly sequins.

Once the tree was dry, the boys practiced some fine motor skills by cutting the brown ric-rac ribbon. Each ornament used two pieces of ribbon. One was for a tree root. Then we made a loop to hang the ornament using a second, but longer, piece of ribbon. Let it dry and then it's ready to hang on the tree!

Here's my three-year old's ornament:

And here's my five-year old's slightly crooked, but super sparkly ornament:

I just love how these Christmas ornaments turned out! And I loved how easy they were to make.
