Easy Glittered Handprint Ornaments

One of my very favourite parts of Christmas is making ornaments with my kids. Over the years our tree has become a hodgepodge of handcrafted, passed down, and store bought ornaments and I sort of love it that way. If nothing else, it’s full of character and memories. This year we’re adding these sweet glittered handprint ornaments to our collection. They’re very easy to make and require basic materials you likely already have in the house, which is a definite win in my opinion. They also perfectly capture the shape and size of those little hands at this moment in time, which makes them a fantastic keepsake and gift too.

Here’s what you’ll need to create these glittered handprint ornaments at home:

• cereal box cardboard (or something similar)
• a pencil
• scissors
• a single hole punch
• white glue
• a paintbrush
• glitter
• embroidery floss, baker’s twine, or some other string
• Mod Podge (optional)
• washi tape and a thin permanent marker (optional)

These sweet little ornaments are just as easy as you’d expect them to be, so let’s get started! First up, trace your little one’s hand onto the cardboard (or have older children trace their own), making sure to close the bottom of the handprint in with a rounded line.

Next, carefully cut out the handprint and punch a single hole near the base of the palm. If you’re doing this project with an older child, allowing them to cut out their own handprint not only offers a great hand muscle and fine motor skill workout, but it also makes the keepsake that much more ‘them’.

In the meantime, if you’d like to create a little tag for the ornament, simply take a long piece of washi tape and write your child’s name and the year off to one side. Or better yet, if they’re old even to write, have them do it! Next, fold the tape over a short length of string, adhering it to itself to create a little flag.
