Easy No-Sew Halloween Costumes: Ninja Turtle

By Jen Schlumberger, CBC Kids Staff

So, you're ready to make your own ninja turtle costume. Here is all you need to know.

What You'll Need

  • a green shirt
  • green pants
  • red, blue, purple or orange felt
  • green felt
  • brown fabric
  • plastic bags
  • elastic
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun

MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE COSTUME

How It's Made

1. Making the abs

Cut out six circles from your green felt to make the shape of abdominal muscles on the front of the shirt. Hot glue them to the shirt.

Tip: You can take a piece of cardboard and put it in between the shirt so the glue doesn't leak through.

2. Making the shell

Flip the shirt over. Take your brown fabric and cut a large oval shape to fit the back of your shirt. Hot glue the edges of the brown circle, but leave a small opening. Once the glue dries (2-3 minutes) take any plastic bags and stuff the shell. Use your glue gun to seal the shell.

3. Making the mask

It's time to make the mask. Choose the colour of felt for your ninja turtle:

Red: Raphael

Orange: Michelangelo

Blue: Leonardo

Purple: Donatello

Take the felt and fold it in half. Cut out a strip of fabric roughly 3 inches wide (8 cm). Don't forget to cut out eye-holes. Once the front of the mask has been cut out, cut a piece of elastic to join the two sides. You can use a little extra piece of felt to cover up where the elastic joins the mask for extra reinforcement.

4. Ninja Accessories

Now that your ninja costume is done, you can use the leftover pieces of brown fabric from the shell to cut strips and make bands to wrap around the elbows and knees. Each ninja turtle also has their own weapon, so you can make those as well if you'd like to.

Voila! Your ninja turtle is now ready (and warm enough) to go trick-or-treating, all for under $25!
