Fall Sensory Play With Soap Foam

Soap foam is a versatile sensory bin filler, one that my youngest son particularly enjoys.

It's easy to make, inexpensive to make and cleans up really easy (it is soap after all!). Plus, if you have kids that are reluctant to wash their hands, playing with soap foam is a great way to convince them to wash their hands.

Since fall is nearly here, I decided to turn our plain soap foam into a colourful autumn-inspired sensory bin.

You Will Need:

• soap foam (instructions below)
• acrylic fall leaves—vase filler or table scatter (available at craft or dollar stores)
• bucket of water
• towel

To Make Soap Foam:

1. Mix a generous amount of liquid hand soap with a splash or two of water.

2. Use a stand mixer, whisk or hand mixer to mix soap and water until you get a thick, frothy foam. Alternatively, if you use foaming hand soap, you can fill up the dispenser with liquid soap (castile soap works the best!) and some water. Then simply pump the foaming soap into a container.

3. Once your soap foam is made, you can add anything you like: essential oils, liquid watercolors or food coloring, glitter, etc. We use almond scented castile soap at our house so our soap foam already smelled delicious!

Fall Sensory Play With Soap Foam

I added acrylic fall leaves to a tub of soap foam and my two boys quickly buried all the leaves. The leaves disappeared into the frothy foam, so the boys started digging around the foam to find the leaves. It was like a fall treasure hunt!

The boys would pull the leaves out of the soap foam and drop them into a bucket of clean water.

They would wash the leaves off and then proceed to dry them with a towel. See, that's how I tricked my youngest into washing his hands. So you could easily replicate this activity in a bathroom sink to make hand-washing more fun!

As an alternative to the acrylic fall leaves, you could go on a scavenger hunt around your neighborhood and collect fall leaves of various colors. Then add the leaves to the soap foam!
