Felt School Bus Math Busy-Bag Activity

By Dyan Robson, And Next Comes L

Aug 25, 2014

It's hard to believe that it's already time for kids to be back in school. And it's even harder to believe that my oldest, J, will be off to kindergarten this fall. So to get into the back to school spirit, I put together this school bus math busy bag that works on shape learning and counting.

You Will Need:

• felt (yellow, red, gray, black and white)
• dice

Instructions:

Cut a square and a rectangle from the yellow felt to make the body of the school bus. Then cut out two black circles and two smaller white circles for the tires.

Use the red felt to make an octagon for a stop sign and gray felt to make the windows of the bus. I used mostly felt scraps to make this felt school bus, which is a bonus.

To turn this busy bag into a counting game, I decided to make six windows for the bus so that we could use dice for the math component.

Before we tried the counting game, my boys each had a couple of turns building the school bus using the felt shapes.

Then the boys would roll the die, count out the corresponding number of windows, and put the windows on the bus.

This busy bag is a great way to work on fine motor skills, counting, one-to-one correspondence and shape learning. You can even work on colors as the bus is assembled.
