Hanukkah Craft: Egg Carton Menorah

This egg carton menorah provides kids with a menorah of their very own to safely “light” during the eight nights of Hanukkah, and it’s easy enough for even the youngest crafters to make (with some cutting help from grown-ups, of course).

The project requires just a few basic supplies, and fosters creativity and fine-motor development.

Your child will be so proud to display this colourful menorah on a windowsill in your home this Hanukkah.

(Normally I would have the hooligans over to help me craft, but since COVID-19, I've been doing the crafting myself — so no little hands for these photos.)

What You'll Need:

• egg carton
• popsicle sticks
• paint (we used acrylic craft paint)
• paint brushes
• yellow and orange card stock
• scissors
• glue
• paring knife (for an adult to poke slits in egg carton)
• acrylic craft varnish (if using acrylic paint)

How It's Made:

Begin by cutting the bottom of an egg carton in half so you have a strip of six egg cups. Paint this piece and let it dry.

Paint nine popsicle sticks in bright colours and add some designs with white paint and a liner brush. To make your paint colours really pop, brush with clear craft varnish once the paint has dried.

Cut nine flames out of yellow and orange card stock, and glue these to the tops of your popsicle stick candles. You can make the helper candle appear taller by making its flame bigger than all the rest.

Use a paring knife to poke nine slits in the cups of the egg carton.

Because you have more popsicle sticks than egg cups, you’ll need to make two slits in two of the egg cups. You can see that I did that with the second cup in from each end of the egg carton.

To assemble, wedge the helper candle in between the two middle egg cups, and insert the rest of the candles into the menorah.

Place on a windowsill and enjoy.
