How to Create the Perfect Reading Nook

By Arlee Greenwood, Small Potatoes

Reading, reading, reading. Such an important part of growing up. To be lost in a storybook is a delightful way to spend any afternoon, rain or shine. But to be lost in a storybook whilst snuggled up in your own cozy nook? Well, that's a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Building a beautiful reading nook in the playroom or child's bedroom is as easy as 1, 2, 3! All you need is a corner, 3 thumb tacks (or small nails if you prefer) and a twin-sized bed sheet. Add pillows, blankets, books, and a string of mini lights and you have magic.

Stretch the sheet out and thumb tack it to the wall in three places, creating a triangular tent structure. The top point of your triangle should be tacked about a foot and a half higher than your two side thumbtacks. String your mini lights on the inside of your sheet, over and around your thumbtacks.

Place a big cushion on the floor beneath. You can use a dog-bed cushion, or just pile a bunch of pillows on the floor under the tent. I used the cushion from our papasan chair and sewed a cover for it with a round tablecloth. Add some soft blankets, maybe some stuffed toys, and a good stash of books and you are finished!

I sewed a little bunting (triangles of fabric sewn to a cord or rick rack) and stitched it to the outside of our tent to add a bit of whimsy, but this step is completely optional.

The children in my day care absolutely love our new reading nook. They can be found in there at all times of the day...resting, cuddling their baby dolls, chatting in whispers to one another and daydreaming. But most often, they can be found snuggled up with a friend, lost in a storybook...
